This was my first Christmas as an expat living in Germany. I enjoyed a lot the markets and the atmosphere – as for my Christmas meal, it was very international 🙂
For starter, we had chicories and humus from middle-east inspiration.
Then I had Tofurky sausages imported from the US with German “Semmelknödel” – those are balls of potatoes and herbs. I even found a Pina Colada vegan and alcohol free for the Mexican spirit 🙂 – The meal was very good but a bit dry, I should have added some sauce.
The dessert was my homemade (yes, I am proud) cake with pears with vegan vanilla ice-cream Lovice from Sweden.
Beautiful Heidelberg with the university, the shops, the old town and the amazing castle. The Christmas market starts near the Church of the Holy Spirit and you can then walk from there (or… take the funicular as I did) to go to the castle where you’ll find more stalls. And the view from the top is just incredible. Jingle bells!
When I went to Mannheim, I had lunch at the vegetarian restaurant Heller’s. It is very nearby the train station. You have a cold and a warm buffet, ingredients are clearly marked and you have vegan labels for quite a lot of dishes.
I had rice, carrots and some kind of vegetables pancakes. To be honest, I did not like it very much. It was not tasty and quite “oily”.
So I went to VogelFrei for dessert and I had a wonderful tart with lemon and almonds… so delicious. it saevd my day 🙂
I went to the “town of dragons” to visit their Weihnachtsmarkt. It is spread across the entire town centre and I really enjoyed the decorations, especially inside their shopping center.
We carry on with the Weihnachtsmarkt of Frankfurt – it is located at the Römer platz with a big Christmas tree.
The Xmas markets in Germany are called Weihnachtsmarkt – they open the last weekend of November which is also the first week of Advent. Each town and village has stalls, arty gifts, local animations, sausage smell and glühwein (hot wine). This is my first Christmas of Germany so let me show you a few Christmas markets in my area – let’s start by the one in Mannheim.
I went to the normal one but there is another one in the town center, dedicated to kids with a very brothers Grimm spirit 🙂
